What Do Rabbits Eat
It is recommended that your rabbit eat a diet that is grass or hay based. For the majority of rabbits, only feed limited quantities of rabbit food that contains pellets. Make sure they have limitless hay. You can supplement hay and pellets with other green foods. A more natural diet consists of mainly hay and greens with a smaller amount of pellets or mix. This type of hay and vegetable diet suits most rabbits well as it is closely related to the diet of a wild rabbit.
It is not wise to feed rabbits lettuce, although many people still think it is a good thing. Lettuce can cause runny stools which opens them up to dehydration.
If you adopt a rabbit, it is best to continue the mixture that it is used to. Make changes to the food gradually. Mix a little of the new food in with the old so the rabbit's digestion can get used to it. Make sure you feed your rabbit high quality food and that it contains the recommended daily requirements of minerals and vitamins. Keep in mind that baby rabbits should not eat vegetables until around 3 to 4 months of age.
Timothy hay and pellets are usually better for lop-eared rabbits than alfalfa. Alfalfa hay and pellets are meant to be fed to baby rabbits and to rabbits who are being raised for meat. Other varieties of hay include oat, brome, and orchard grass.
